Town of Tyre and Seneca County Maps
Editor's Note: The Roudabush Survey May 1979 states the address as 1423 Mays Point Rd., whereas an address of 1175 Old School House Road is stated by Walter Gable, Seneca County Historian 6/6/2006; however, the Town of Tyre Assessor, Philip Griswold has verified on 9/30/2019 the address as 1145 Old School House Road. The street signs at the far ends of this short road both have Old School House Road signs. The National Register of Historic Places application 9/20/2009 states 1145 Mays Point Road. Google Maps lists the road as Mays Point Rd. The structure is at the SE corner of Lay Road and Old Schoolhouse Rd. (Mays Point Rd.).
The Lay house 1175 Old School House Road, town of Tyre, was built by Hiram Lay, circa 1847-48. There was once a cobblestone carriage house (photos below) across the road to the north. It was demolished when the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge acquired the property. The cupola from the wood barn was re-installed on the roof of the house. The porch was added later. There is a brick smokehouse on the rear slope. The house has an original bake oven built into an inside chimney wall. Richard Palmer blog.
Permanent File of Cobblestone Structures states that the property of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Lay had always been in the family until Mr. Rogers purchased the property. The historical context of the Lay family and property can be found in Section B, page 4 of the Hiram Lay Carriage House documentation in the National Archives Catalog. "The Portrait and Biographical Record of Seneca and Schuyler Counties New York", pages 484 and 485, Chapman Publishing Company 1895, provides a details biography for Hiram M. Lay.
